Mandatory 10-Digit Dialing Coming
In July 2022, the FCC will establish 988 as a new three-digit nationwide number to reach the National Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Crisis Lifeline (1-800-273-TALK remains in effect until then). In order for 988 to work in our area code (406), 10-digit local dialing must first be implemented. That means you will need to change the way you dial local calls.
After April 5, 2021, 3 Rivers customers should begin dialing 10 digits for all local calls (406 + telephone number) to become familiarized with this. If you forget and dial just 7 digits, your call will still be completed, although there may be a brief delay for calls outside of 3 Rivers’ service area.
Beginning October 24, 2021, you must dial 10 digits (406 + telephone number) for all local calls. On and after this date, local calls dialed with only 7-digits may not be completed, and a recording will inform you that your call cannot be completed as dialed. You must hang up and dial again using the area code and the 7-digit number.
